Mobile game apps can be extremely lucrative if designed the right way. Here are five key tips to keep in mind when designing your amazing gaming app.
Did you know that mobile game apps generated more revenue than box office movies in 2016?
The gaming app industry is like a millennial gold rush, teeming with opportunity for savvy app inventors.
But to be successful, you must set your gaming app apart in an increasingly competitive market.
Continue reading to discover five key suggestions to point you on the road to success with your awesome game app idea.
1. Find A Niche
Give gamers something they can’t get anywhere else.
Kim Kardashian’s app has made millions of dollars targeting fans who want to experience her glamorous life. The app quantifies players’ fame and social status, giving them incentives to keep playing by earning more points.
Words With Friends allows users to compete in word puzzles with people in their contact lists.
Candy Crush gives players the thrill of…crushing candy?
Find your unique niche to fill a need in the gaming app market by giving players a specific experience with an original concept.
2. Keep Your Game App Familiar
Originality is key to staying on top of the gaming app industry, but the most successful apps play with familiar concepts.
Angry Birds, Candy Crush, and Fruit Ninja all have similar, menial gameplay with slight variations of the same concept.
Gambling apps based on solitaire, mahjong, and blackjack are consistently popular because they build off familiar concepts.
Set your app apart through graphics, sounds, and theme, but don’t try anything too conceptual on a mobile app.
The complex story arcs of games like Myst simply do not translate to mobile games.
3. Make Your App Available For Free
Although it may seem counterintuitive, free apps make more money for app inventors than “pay to download” apps.
Consumers are much less likely to purchase an app than download a free one, especially if they haven’t played it before.
After your game app is launched on the market and starts getting traction, you then have other ways to monetize your app.
With a high number of downloads, you can make tremendous revenue from in-app advertising.
Advertisements pay you based on the number of ad clicks and views; free apps are bound to have a lot more traffic.
In-app purchases (IAP) are also an excellent way to make money from games featuring avatars or modifications.
IAP works best for massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs), but in-app purchases are also viable for simpler games as upgrades.
4. Use A Simple Gameplay Design
Always design your game apps with mobile in mind.
Most phones have small screens, so keep your design simple.
Games with incredible graphics like Halo and Final Fantasy simply do not translate to mobile.
Work with your app development team to create a gameplay design that is eye-catching, unique, and straightforward.
Your app’s icon is the first thing consumers see.
Establish a recognizable visual language for your game.
5. Make Your Game App With Cross-Platform Compatibility
If you limit your gaming app to iOS or Android, you’re potentially losing almost half of your potential customers.
While your app should be designed for mobile gaming at the forefront, it should ideally be compatible with tablets, PCs, laptops, and other gaming devices for maximum exposure.
Also, don’t overlook the global market.
Make sure your cross platform game app has tutorials and gameplay available in foreign languages, especially Chinese.
China is the number one consumer of mobile gaming, so ignoring this segment is detrimental to your app’s development.
